Gail Resen

Over many years, Gail Resen has pursued the exploration of her art through the manipulation of fiber and textile materials. From early works of loom woven sculpture to recent off-loom, cut, painted and manipulated canvas constructions she has steadfastly maintained her interest in the development of the aesthetic possibilities of this medium. As a result, her work has become uniquely personal and has been described as redefining the terms “drawing” and “painting”. In a series titled Lightplay, she has produced over one hundred wall units each a different canvas constructed pattern. Each is painted white in order to enhance the strength of the resulting surface shadows. When hung together, these Modernist Design inspired works engage the viewer by their lively variety and rhythmic interplay. Currently, in another series, she is creating vibrant, highly chromatic, visually kinetic works. These square and rectangular, varied sized wall reliefs, connect the viewer through motion as they appear to change depending upon the angle from which they are viewed.

“I enjoy working back and forth between the white and color works. One is the study of light and surface, the other series, a study in form and color interaction. Each series has its own challenges and solutions. Each, I find intellectually and visually stimulating as well as responsive to the poetic and meditative qualities that I desire.”

A recipient of a NY Foundation for the Arts grant and several Anni and Josef Albers Foundation Residency. Ms. Resen’s work has been exhibited in museums and exhibitions throughout the United States.
