When we think of the ideal man or woman, we don’t picture them disembodied. But Corinne Mariaud’s series, “Laying Head”, sees it a little differently. Much like “Trophies”, Mariaud creates shocking portraits to demonstrate that our internal essence is what matters most. Here, we see a hauntingly beautiful, bodiless head laid out on the table before us. It stops us in our tracks and makes us ponder. And that’s exactly the point—because real beauty is being at peace with our thoughts, separated from everything else, light and free. This theme takes cues from Constantin Brâncuși’s Sleeping Muse from 1910, where a bronze sleeping head sculpture symbolized solitude and peace. One of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, the late Brâncuși once said, “Simplicity is complexity resolved”. That sentiment can be felt here in each of Mariaud’s subjects, where the head is all it needs, appearing to be put on a pedestal. From Brâncuși to Ron Mueck to Henri de Miller, Mariaud has had a range of inspiration from some of the greats in Body Art. Mariaud’s Man’s Head Resting on his Hand reminds us of Miller’s 1986 stone sculpture, Écoute, where people still revel today in its giant structure. But for all the complexity that “Laying Head” exudes, there’s softness to it all. The faces are round and angelic, the hair is soft and healthy, and sometimes you’ll catch a grin. But if it gets us to stop talking and simply listen, then that’s art in itself.
